Hotel Rwanda Scene Analysis

Hotel Rwanda is a emotional film. Synonymous with powerful films is amazing directors, Shawshank has its Darabont, Fight Club has its Fincher and Hotel Rwanda has its Terry George. The techniques used in this films are extremely effective, sound, camera angles, acting are all top notch and deserve praise.The use of non digetic sounds, one of the most horrifying and powerful scenes was the “The River Route” scene. After being advised to go through the river route Paul Rusesabagina, the protagonist, was horrified to find a road full of dead bodies, which may sound horrifying at first glance, don’t worry the genius of the director made it a thousand times worse using sound, camera angles and smooth techniques. First, Im going to start with sound, Terry George was extremely clever with his use of sound and often used non digetic sounds to his advantage. With sound of the machete to the tribal vocals, Hotel Rwanda is full of sounds that not only terrify but fill with hope but i digress. As the beginning shot establishes the mist, you get almost a unnerving feeling. The mist is a effective albeit a bit obvious pathetic fallac. The non digetic sound is used with prescion and flair.

The camera angles are one of the strong points of this moving drama. Each one thought out with the utmost care and precision. Example, the over the shoulder shot in the truck that showed nothing but Paul and Gregoire driving into almost a never ending abyss of fog probably caused by the smoke from the burnt houses and exploded cars, but I digress.
